Hit Pause: Well-being at Your Desk

With Covid-19 everyone’s working from home, often in poor ergonomic conditions leading to physical tensions. Many find it difficult to “switch off”, and stay on their computers at all hours

Here are some tips to prevent tension and tiredness and energize your body and mind at your home office:

Move your body!

  • Even a little bit helps!
Every hour, take a few minutes to move your arms, shoulders and spine to ensure good circulation and prevent getting stuck. Think of the kind of exercises recommended in in-flight magazines – rolling your neck & shoulders & ankles. Try arching and rounding your spine a few times, or stretching your arms above your head.
  • Stand up & walk as often as you can – take a phone call standing up, walk frequently to your kitchen to get a drink (water and green or herbal tea recommended)
  • Movement is also vital in order to move your lymph, the body fluid containing infection-fighting white cells. Lymph moves when we move, so take frequent pauses to move your body (and drink plenty of water, too).

Breathe deeper!

  • Breath has an amazing effect on both your mood and your energy level.
By breathing deeper you will bring more oxygen into your body for fresh energy – and when you make your exhalation longer than your inhalation, it has an immediate calming effect. Deep diaphragmatic breathing (moving the abdomen with your breath, directing the breath lower in the body) also supports the good functioning of your internal organs – think of your digestive system etc.
  • Take a pause of a few minutes and try one of the following breathing exercises:
    • 4 : 4 – inhale to the count of four, exhale to the count of four – close your eyes and breathe like this, slowly and rhythmically, for a couple of minutes, and observe the calmness it brings
    • 4 : 4 : 4 : 4 (“box breathing”) – inhale to the count of four, retain to 4, exhale to 4, retain to 4 – continue for a couple of minutes, and again notice the calmness
